Frequently Asked Questions
Dogs have a sense of smell from 10,000 to 100,000 times more powerful than humans. With approximately fifty sense receptors to every one human sense receptor, a dog’s ability to detect any scent it’s trained to identify is immensely powerful.
Dogs have long been used for detection work for explosives, drugs, food, human rescue and even cancer. Using a dog’s acute sense of smell to detect mold takes the guess work out of locating toxic mold in a home or business.
Air sampling is a popular form of testing for mold offered by many mold inspection companies. Unfortunately, air sampling is highly inaccurate and has a high rate of false negative results.
Most toxic mold spores are too heavy to actively circulate in the air in the quantities needed to be picked up by air sampling equipment and result in property owners being told their home or business is clear when it is not. In addition, different types of mold have different active and dormant periods yearly. The mold you have could be dormant and even less likely to be detected by air sampling.
On a personal note, we spent close to $1,000 on air sampling when we were trying to locate mold in our own home. We were told our house was clear and we did not have mold from the air sampling results. If you look at the photos of our air ducts on the homepage, you can see we clearly had mold blowing all over our home which air sampling should have been able to easily detect if it was reliable and accurate.
As few as 15% of these tests are considered accurate due to misuse and mishandling. These tests are designed to be used after a room and all of the intended surfaces to be tested have been wiped clean and left untouched for 10-14 days. A dust sample is then collected from a single room and sent in for testing.
Unfortunately, many users do not clean all of the surfaces before taking the sample which results in dust samples that include spores that have been building over weeks, months, years or even decades depending on the surface the sample is collected from.
In order to save money by not purchasing a test for each room, many users will use one cloth to collect their sample from the entire structure and send that in to be tested. This also results in a higher accumulation of spores collected from a higher number of surfaces and results in skewed testing.
Finally, even if one were to assume the results of their test were accurate, the test does not tell you where in the house the toxic mold is located. Mold spores and mycotoxins from the source can travel anywhere in a structure. The property owner is still left questioning where the mold is located and whether all of the sources of mold were identified.

We ask that you prepare for an inspection with the following steps:
- Please ensure any pets on the property are secured away during the inspection. While Murphy is friendly with all animals, we must ensure his safety and restrict his interaction with animals on your property.
- Please refrain from lighting candles or using any scent diffusers or sprays ahead of our inspection. While these items will not keep Murphy from being able to locate mold, they can be an irritant.
- Please secure or remove any breakables or precious possessions ahead of our visit. We do our best to maneuver around your property with great care, but we cannot guarantee that items will not be bumped while inspecting. Please remove any boxes or clutter that may hinder Murphy’s ability to fully inspect all areas of your property. Murphy’s accuracy in detecting mold can be hindered if he is unable to closely inspect an area.
No, mold detection work does not cause Murphy any harm. He comes into far more contact with mold running around in the wooded acre lot that is his backyard and in the surrounding woods of his neighborhood each day. He is minimally exposed to mold when doing detection work in properties for limited amounts of time and locating mold that is hidden behind surfaces. We would not allow Murphy to work in mold detection if we were concerned it would cause him any harm.
